Which method should you use?
- Proportional is what a notification means when it pairs a percentage with a CGPA on a stated scale, such as 55% or 5.5 on 10 points. Start here.
- Multiply by 9.5 is the CBSE formula for Class X. Use it only if your board or university says so.
- Your university may use a formula of its own, printed on the reverse of the mark sheet or in the academic regulations.
Where a recruiter asks for proof, the conversion must come from your university — most issue an equivalence certificate on request. Apply for it early; it takes time.
There Is No Single National Formula
This is the part that causes trouble. CGPA to percentage conversion is set by each university, not by any central rule. Two candidates with the same 7.4 CGPA from different universities can hold official percentages several points apart.
Your university’s formula is normally printed on the reverse of the mark sheet or in the academic regulations. Use that one. The methods offered above cover the common cases.
When the Notification Gives Both Figures
Some notifications settle the question for you by stating both. The ZSI Great Nicobar notice asks for “at least 55% marks or CGPA of 5.5 in a 10-point scale”, which is a straight proportional conversion — CGPA divided by the scale, multiplied by 100.
Where a notification does that, the recruiter has told you which reading it accepts, and you do not need your university’s formula to judge your own eligibility. Where it gives only a percentage, you do.
Get the Equivalence Certificate Early
If you are shortlisted, document verification may require written proof of the conversion — an equivalence or percentage certificate issued by your university. Most institutions issue one on application, but it takes time, and candidates from the islands studying at mainland universities lose weeks to the post.
Apply for it as soon as you are shortlisted rather than waiting for the verification date. A calculated figure from any website, including this one, is not proof.
