Quant – Time & Work – Set 8

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. A and B can do a work in 8 days and 24 days respectively. They work on alternate days, starting with A. In how many days is the work finished?
    • A. 18 days
    • B. 12 days
    • C. 10 days
    • D. 16 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 12 days

In 2 days (A then B) they do 1/6. After 5 such pairs (10 days) the work done is 5/6. A works one more day, then B finishes the remaining 1/24 in 1 day(s). Total = 12 days.

  2. A can finish a work in 18 days. He works for 8 days and leaves. What fraction of the work remains?
    • A. 7/18
    • B. 2/3
    • C. 5/9
    • D. 1/2
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 5/9

    Work done = 8/18 = 4/9. Remaining = 1 - 4/9 = 5/9.

  3. A and B can do a job in 12 days, B and C in 16 days, and C and A in 24 days. In how many days can all three together do it?
    • A. 11 2/3 days
    • B. 8 2/3 days
    • C. 7 2/3 days
    • D. 10 2/3 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 10 2/3 days

    Adding: 2(A + B + C) = 1/12 + 1/16 + 1/24 = 3/16. So A + B + C = 3/32 a day, and the time = 10 2/3 days.

  4. A can do a piece of work in 10 days and B can do it in 15 days. In how many days can they finish it together?
    • A. 9 days
    • B. 5 days
    • C. 7 days
    • D. 6 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 6 days

    One day's work = 1/10 + 1/15 = 1/6. Time = 6 days.

  5. A alone can do a piece of work in 60 days. A and B together can do it in 40 days. In how many days can B alone do it?
    • A. 122 days
    • B. 116 days
    • C. 124 days
    • D. 120 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 120 days

    B's one day = 1/40 - 1/60 = 1/120. B alone takes 120 days.

  6. A and B can do a work in 16 and 48 days respectively. They work together for 2 days and then A leaves. In how many more days will B finish the remaining work?
    • A. 40 days
    • B. 34 days
    • C. 42 days
    • D. 36 days
    Show answer and explanation

  7. 20 men can finish a work in 12 days. How many days will 15 men take to finish the same work?
    • A. 14 days
    • B. 20 days
    • C. 22 days
    • D. 16 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 16 days

    Total work = 20 × 12 = 240 man-days. 15 men take 240/15 = 16 days.

  8. A can do a piece of work in 6 days and B in 3 days. They work together and are paid Rs 1200 in all. What is A's share?

    • C. Rs 400
    • D. Rs 520
    Show answer and explanation
