Quant – Time & Work – Set 6

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.
Review this set's questions and answers (opens after you submit the test)

  1. P and Q together can do a job in 6 days. Q and R can finish the same job in 60/7 days. P started the work and worked for 3 days. Q and R continued for 6 days. Then the difference of days in which R and P can complete the job alone is :
    • A. 8
    • B. 12
    • C. 10
    • D. 15
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 10

    Work = 60 units: P + Q = 10, Q + R = 7. P works 3 days and Q + R 6 days: 3P + 42 = 60, so P = 6, Q = 4, R = 3. P takes 10 days and R takes 20 days; difference = 10.

  2. If a man earns Rs.2000 for his first 50 hours of work in a week and is then paid one and one half times his regular hourly rate for additional hours, then the hours must he work to make Rs.2300 in a week is :
    • A. 5 hours
    • B. 6 hours
    • C. 4 hours
    • D. 7 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 5 hours

    Regular rate = 2,000/50 = Rs 40 an hour. Overtime rate = Rs 60. Extra Rs 300 / 60 = 5 hours.

  3. A company employed 200 workers to complete a certain work in 150 days. If only 1/4 of the work had been done in 50 days, how many additional workers were needed to complete the whole work in time?
    • A. 300
    • B. 600
    • C. 200
    • D. 100
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 100

    200 × 50 = 10,000 man-days did 1/4, so the whole job is 40,000. Remaining 30,000 in 100 days needs 300 workers. Additional workers = 100.

  4. If 20 women can lay a road of length 100m in 10 days. 10 women can lay the same road of length 50m in :
    • A. 20 days
    • B. 5 days
    • C. 15 days
    • D. 10 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 10 days

    Each woman lays 100/(20 × 10) = 0.5 m a day. 10 women lay 5 m a day, so 50 m takes 10 days.

  5. A can do a piece of work in 40 days and B can do it in 60 days. In how many days can they finish it together?
    • A. 27 days
    • B. 25 days
    • C. 24 days
    • D. 21 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 24 days

    One day's work = 1/40 + 1/60 = 1/24. Time = 24 days.

  6. A alone can do a piece of work in 36 days. A and B together can do it in 24 days. In how many days can B alone do it?
    • A. 70 days
    • B. 66 days
    • C. 72 days
    • D. 76 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 72 days

    B's one day = 1/24 - 1/36 = 1/72. B alone takes 72 days.

  7. A and B can do a work in 12 and 24 days respectively. They work together for 5 days and then A leaves. In how many more days will B finish the remaining work?
    • A. 3 days
    • B. 9 days
    • C. 15 days
    • D. 11 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 9 days

    Work done in 5 days = 5 × 1/8 = 5/8. Remaining = 3/8. B takes 3/8 × 24 = 9 days.

  8. A is 2 times as efficient as B. Working together they finish a job in 8 days. In how many days can A alone finish it?
    • A. 12 days
    • B. 10 days
    • C. 16 days
    • D. 8 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 12 days

    Together they do 3 parts a day, finishing 8 × 3 = 24 parts. A does 2 parts a day, so A takes 24/2 = 12 days.

  9. A can do a piece of work in 12 days and B in 4 days. They work together and are paid Rs 2400 in all. What is A's share?
    • A. Rs 780
    • B. Rs 720
    • C. Rs 660
    • D. Rs 600
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Rs 600

    Work rates are 1/12 : 1/4 = 4 : 12, and wages are shared in that ratio. A's share = 2400 × 4/(12+4) = Rs 600.

  10. A, B and C can do a work alone in 6, 12 and 12 days respectively. In how many days will they finish it working together?
    • A. 3 days
    • B. 7 days
    • C. 6 days
    • D. 5 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 3 days

    One day's work = 1/6 + 1/12 + 1/12 = 1/3. Time = 3 days.
