Quant – Time & Work – Set 3

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. 2 men and a woman together can complete a piece of work in 14 days, while 4 women and 2 men together can do it in 8 days. If a man gets ₹600 per day, how much should a woman get per day ?
    • A. Rs. 360
    • B. Rs. 400
    • C. Rs. 480
    • D. Rs. 450
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. Rs. 400

    (2M + W) × 14 = (2M + 4W) × 8 gives 28M + 14W = 16M + 32W, so M = 1.5 W. Wages go with work, so a woman gets 600 / 1.5 = Rs 400.

  2. If two persons, with equal abilities, can do two jobs in two days then 100 persons with equal abilities can do 100 similar jobs in :
    • A. 100 days
    • B. 2 days
    • C. 10 days
    • D. 5 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 2 days

2 persons do 2 jobs in 2 days, so 1 person does 1 job in 2 days. 100 persons do 100 jobs in 2 days.

  3. A can complete a piece of work in 18 days, B completes in 20 days and C in 30 days, B and C together start the work and are forced to leave after 2 days. The time taken by A alone to complete the remaining work is :
    • A. 10 days
    • B. 15 days
    • C. 12 days
    • D. 16 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 15 days

    Work = 180 units; A, B, C do 10, 9, 6 a day. B and C work 2 days = 30 units. Remaining 150 at 10 a day = 15 days.

  4. X alone can complete a piece of work in 40 days. He worked for 8 days and left. Y alone completed the remaining work in 16 days. How long would X and Y together take to complete the work ?
    • A. 15 days
    • B. 14 days
    • C. 16 2/3 days
    • D. 13 1/3 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 13 1/3 days

    X does 8/40 = 1/5, so Y did 4/5 in 16 days, which means Y takes 20 days. Together 1/40 + 1/20 = 3/40 a day, so 40/3 = 13 1/3 days.

  5. 20 men or 24 women can complete a piece of work in 20 days. If 30 men and 12 women under take to complete the work, the work will be completed in :
    • A. 15 days
    • B. 16 days
    • C. 10 days
    • D. 12 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 10 days

    20 men = 24 women, so 1 man = 1.2 women. 30 men + 12 women = 36 + 12 = 48 women. 24 women take 20 days, so 48 women take 10 days.

  6. 6 men and 8 women can do work in 10 days. Then 3 men and 4 women can do the same work in :
    • A. 12 days
    • B. 18 days
    • C. 20 days
    • D. 24 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 20 days

3 men and 4 women are half of 6 men and 8 women, so they take double the time = 20 days.

  7. 2 men and 3 women can do a piece of work in 10 days while 3 men and 2 women can do the same work in 8 days. Then, 2 men and 1 woman can do the same work in :
    • A. 12 1/2 days
    • B. 13 days
    • C. 12 days
    • D. 13 1/2 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 12 1/2 days

    (2M + 3W) × 10 = (3M + 2W) × 8 gives M = 3.5 W. Total work = 10 × (7 + 3) = 100 W-days. 2 men + 1 woman = 8 W, so 100/8 = 12 1/2 days.

  8. A can do a work in 5 days less than the time taken by B. If both together take 11 1/9 days, the time taken by B alone (in days) is:
    • A. 20
    • B. 15
    • C. 30
    • D. 25
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 25

    Together they take 100/9 days, so 1/(x - 5) + 1/x = 9/100. Try x = 25: 1/20 + 1/25 = 9/100. B alone takes 25 days.

  9. 5 men and 2 women working together can do four times as much work per hour as a man and a woman together. The work done by a man and a woman should be in the ratio :
    • A. 1 : 2
    • B. 1 : 3
    • C. 2 : 1
    • D. 4 : 1
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 2 : 1

    5M + 2W = 4(M + W) gives M = 2W. Man : woman = 2 : 1.

  10. If the work done by (x – 1) men in (x +1) days and the work done by (x + 2) men in (x – 1) days are in the ratio 9 : 10, then the value of x is equal to :
    • A. 7
    • B. 8
    • C. 6
    • D. 5
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 8

    Work ∝ men × days: (x - 1)(x + 1) : (x + 2)(x - 1) = 9 : 10, so (x + 1)/(x + 2) = 9/10. 10x + 10 = 9x + 18, so x = 8.
