Quant – Time & Work – Set 2

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. A and B can do a piece of work in 20 days and 12 days respectively. A started the work alone and then after 4 days B joined him till the completion of the work. How long did the work last ?
    • A. 15 days
    • B. 20 days
    • C. 6 days
    • D. 10 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 10 days

    Work = 60 units; A does 3 and B does 5 a day. A alone in 4 days does 12. Remaining 48 at 8 a day = 6 days. Total = 4 + 6 = 10 days.

  2. 5 persons can prepare an admission list in 8 days working 7 hours a day. If 2 persons join them so as to complete the work in 4 days, how many hours they need to work :
    • A. 10 hours
    • B. 9 hours
    • C. 12 hours
    • D. 8 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 10 hours

    Total work = 5 × 8 × 7 = 280 man-hours. With 7 persons in 4 days, hours per day = 280 / (7 × 4) = 10.

  3. A and B together can do a work in 8 days, B and C together in 10 days, while C and A together in 6 days, if they all work together the work will be completed in :
    • A. 3 3/4 days
    • B. 3 3/7 days
    • C. 4 4/9 days
    • D. 5 5/47 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 5 5/47 days

    A + B = 1/8, B + C = 1/10, C + A = 1/6. Adding, 2(A + B + C) = 47/120, so A + B + C = 47/240 a day. Time = 240/47 = 5 5/47 days.

  4. A man and a boy can complete a work together in 24 days. If for the last six days a boy alone does the work then it is completed in 28 days. How long will the man take to complete the work alone ?
    • A. 36 days
    • B. 24 days
    • C. 20 days
    • D. 72 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 36 days

    Man and boy together work for 22 days, then the boy alone 6 days. 22/24 + 6/boy = 1, so the boy takes 72 days. Man's rate = 1/24 - 1/72 = 1/36. The man takes 36 days.

  5. A and B together can complete a work in 8 days, B alone can complete that work in 12 days. B alone worked for four days. After that how long will A alone take to complete the work ?
    • A. 18 days
    • B. 16 days
    • C. 15 days
    • D. 20 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 16 days

    A's rate = 1/8 - 1/12 = 1/24. B alone in 4 days did 4/12 = 1/3, so 2/3 is left. A takes 2/3 × 24 = 16 days.

  6. Two persons can complete a piece of work in 9 days. How many more people are needed to complete double the work in 12 days ?
    • A. 2
    • B. 1
    • C. 4
    • D. 3
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 1

    2 persons × 9 days = 18 person-days for one work. Double work = 36 person-days in 12 days needs 3 persons. So 1 more person is needed.

  7. A labourer was appointed by a contractor on the condition he would be paid ₹75 for each day of his work but would be fined at the rate of ₹15 per day for his absence. After 20 days, the contractor paid the labourer ₹1140. The number of days the labourer absented from work was :
    • A. 4
    • B. 3
    • C. 5
    • D. 2
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 4

    If he was absent x days: 75(20 - x) - 15x = 1,140. 1,500 - 90x = 1,140, so x = 4.

  8. 60 men could complete a work in 250 days. They worked together for 200 days. After that the work had to be stopped for 10 days due to bad weather. How many more men should be engaged to complete the work in time ?
    • A. 10
    • B. 18
    • C. 20
    • D. 15
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 15

    After 200 days, 1/5 of the work is left, which is 60 men × 50 days of work. Time left = 250 - 200 - 10 = 40 days. Men needed = 60 × 50 / 40 = 75, so 15 more.

  9. A and B alone can complete work in 9 days and 18 days respectively. They worked together, however, 3 days before the completion of the work A left. In how many days was the work completed ?
    • A. 13 days
    • B. 5 days
    • C. 8 days
    • D. 6 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 8 days

    Work = 18 units; A does 2 and B does 1 a day. Last 3 days B alone does 3. Remaining 15 at 3 a day = 5 days. Total = 5 + 3 = 8 days.

  10. A 10 hectare field is harvested by 2 men, 3 women and 4 children together in 10 days. If working capabilities of a man , a woman and a child are in the ratio 5 : 4 : 2, then a 16 hectare field will be reaped by 6 men, 4 women and 7 children in :
    • A. 6 days
    • B. 5 days
    • C. 7 days
    • D. 8 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 8 days

    Units per day: 2 × 5 + 3 × 4 + 4 × 2 = 30. In 10 days = 300 units for 10 ha, so 30 units per hectare. 16 ha = 480 units. Second team does 6 × 5 + 4 × 4 + 7 × 2 = 60 a day, so 480/60 = 8 days.
