Quant – Time & Work – Set 10

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. 24 men can finish a work in 20 days. How many days will 40 men take to finish the same work?
    • A. 18 days
    • B. 6 days
    • C. 14 days
    • D. 12 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 12 days

    Total work = 24 × 20 = 480 man-days. 40 men take 480/40 = 12 days.

  2. A can do a piece of work in 15 days and B in 10 days. They work together and are paid Rs 1200 in all. What is A's share?
    • A. Rs 384
    • B. Rs 480
    • C. Rs 576
    • D. Rs 528
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. Rs 480

    Work rates are 1/15 : 1/10 = 10 : 15, and wages are shared in that ratio. A's share = 1200 × 10/(15+10) = Rs 480.

  3. A, B and C can do a work alone in 15, 30 and 10 days respectively. In how many days will they finish it working together?
    • A. 7 days
    • B. 5 days
    • C. 3 days
    • D. 8 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 5 days

    One day's work = 1/15 + 1/30 + 1/10 = 1/5. Time = 5 days.

  4. A and B can do a work in 16 days and 24 days respectively. They work on alternate days, starting with A. In how many days is the work finished?
    • A. 25 days
    • B. 19 days
    • C. 23 days
    • D. 21 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 19 days

    In 2 days (A then B) they do 5/48. After 9 such pairs (18 days) the work done is 15/16. A finishes the remaining 1/16 in 1 day(s). Total = 19 days.

  5. A can finish a work in 24 days. He works for 10 days and leaves. What fraction of the work remains?
    • A. 7/12
    • B. 5/8
    • C. 11/24
    • D. 13/24
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 7/12

    Work done = 10/24 = 5/12. Remaining = 1 - 5/12 = 7/12.

  6. 10 men or 20 women can finish a job in 20 days. In how many days can 3 men and 2 women together finish it?
    • A. 54 days
    • B. 46 days
    • C. 48 days
    • D. 50 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 50 days

    10 men = 20 women, so 1 man = 2 women. 3 men + 2 women = 8 women. Total work = 20 × 20 = 400 woman-days, so 8 women take 400/8 = 50 days.

  7. A and B can do a job in 10 days, B and C in 15 days, and C and A in 30 days. In how many days can all three together do it?
    • A. 10 days
    • B. 7 days
    • C. 11 days
    • D. 9 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 10 days

    Adding: 2(A + B + C) = 1/10 + 1/15 + 1/30 = 1/5. So A + B + C = 1/10 a day, and the time = 10 days.

  8. A alone can do a piece of work in 45 days. A and B together can do it in 30 days. In how many days can B alone do it?
    • A. 88 days
    • B. 84 days
    • C. 92 days
    • D. 90 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 90 days

    B's one day = 1/30 - 1/45 = 1/90. B alone takes 90 days.

  9. A and B can do a work in 10 and 15 days respectively. They work together for 5 days and then A leaves. In how many more days will B finish the remaining work?
    • A. 2 1/2 days
    • B. 6 1/2 days
    • C. 1/2 days
    • D. 4 1/2 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 2 1/2 days

    Work done in 5 days = 5 × 1/6 = 5/6. Remaining = 1/6. B takes 1/6 × 15 = 2 1/2 days.

  10. 24 men can finish a work in 20 days. How many days will 20 men take to finish the same work?
    • A. 26 days
    • B. 20 days
    • C. 24 days
    • D. 28 days
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 24 days

    Total work = 24 × 20 = 480 man-days. 20 men take 480/20 = 24 days.
