Quant – Time, Speed & Distance – Set 2

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.
Review this set's questions and answers (opens after you submit the test)

This free practice set from AndamanJobs has 10 questions to be solved in 8 minutes. Every question is listed below with four options. Open Show answer and explanation under a question to see the correct option and why it is correct. Try the timed test above first, then use this list to revise the questions you got wrong.

  1. Two trains are running with speed 30 km/hr. and 58 km/hr. in the same direction, A man in the slower train passes the faster train 18 seconds. The length (in metres) of the faster train is :
    • A. 100
    • B. 140
    • C. 70
    • D. 128
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 140

    Relative speed = 58 - 30 = 28 km/h = 70/9 m/s. Length = 70/9 × 18 = 140 m.

  2. Two trains start at the same time for two station A and B toward B and A respectively. If the distance between A and B is 220 km and their speeds are 50km/hr and 60 km/hr respectively then after how much time will they meet each other :
    • A. 2 1/2 hr
    • B. 1 hr
    • C. 3 hr
    • D. 2 hr
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 2 hr

    Closing speed = 50 + 60 = 110 km/h. Time = 220/110 = 2 hours.

  3. Two trains 105 metres and 90 metres long, runs at the speed of 45km/hr and 72 km/hr respectively, in opposite directions on parallel tracks. The time which they take to cross each other, is :
    • A. 5 seconds
    • B. 7 seconds
    • C. 8 seconds
    • D. 6 seconds
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 6 seconds

    Total length = 195 m. Relative speed = 45 + 72 = 117 km/h = 32.5 m/s. Time = 195/32.5 = 6 seconds.

  4. A train starts from A at 7 a.m. towards B with speed 50 km/h. Another train starts from B at 8 a.m. with speed 60 km/h towards A. Both of them meet at 10 a.m. at C. The ratio of the distance AC to BC is :
    • A. 6 : 5
    • B. 5 : 4
    • C. 5 : 6
    • D. 4 : 5
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 5 : 4

    Train A runs 3 hours at 50 km/h = 150 km. Train B runs 2 hours at 60 km/h = 120 km. AC : BC = 150 : 120 = 5 : 4.

  5. Two trains travel in the same direction at the speed of 56 km/h. and 29 km/h. respectively. The faster train passes a man in the slower train in 10 seconds. The length of the faster train (in metres) is :
    • A. 100
    • B. 120
    • C. 75
    • D. 80
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 75

    Relative speed = 56 - 29 = 27 km/h = 7.5 m/s. Length = 7.5 × 10 = 75 m.

  6. A train passes a platform 60 metre long in 30 seconds and a man standing on the platform in 15 seconds. The speed of the train is :
    • A. 14.4 kmph
    • B. 21.6 kmph
    • C. 12.4 kmph
    • D. 18.4 kmph
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 14.4 kmph

    If the train is L m long at speed v: L = 15v (passes a man). L + 60 = 30v. So 15v + 60 = 30v, v = 4 m/s = 14.4 km/h.

  7. Ram arrives at a Bank 15 minutes earlier than scheduled time if he drives his car at 42 km/ hr. If he drives a car at 35 km/hr he arrives 5 minutes late. The distance of the Bank from his starting point is :
    • A. 210 km
    • B. 72 km
    • C. 70 km
    • D. 60 km
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 70 km

    The time difference is 15 + 5 = 20 minutes = 1/3 hour. d/35 - d/42 = 1/3 gives d/210 = 1/3, so d = 70 km.

  8. A train, 150m long, passes a pole in 15 seconds and another train of the same length travelling in the opposite direction in 12 seconds. The speed of the second train is :
    • A. 52 km/hr
    • B. 48 km/hr
    • C. 54 km/hr
    • D. 45 km/hr
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 54 km/hr

    Speed of the first train = 150/15 = 10 m/s. Crossing in opposite directions: 300 m in 12 s = 25 m/s relative, so the second train = 15 m/s = 54 km/h.

  9. A train travelling at 48 km/hr crosses another train, having half its length and travelling in the opposite direction at 42 km/hr, in 12 seconds. It also passes a railway platform in 45 seconds. The length of the railway platform is :
    • A. 200 m
    • B. 300 m
    • C. 350 m
    • D. 400 m
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 400 m

    Lengths are L and L/2. Relative speed 90 km/h = 25 m/s, so 1.5L = 25 × 12 = 300, L = 200 m. Speed 48 km/h = 40/3 m/s, so train + platform = 40/3 × 45 = 600 m. Platform = 400 m.

  10. A bus moving at a speed of 45 km/hr overtakes a truck 150 metres ahead going in the same direction in 30 seconds. The speed of the truck :
    • A. 25 km/hr
    • B. 27 km/hr
    • C. 24 km/hr
    • D. 28 km/hr
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 27 km/hr

    Relative speed = 150/30 = 5 m/s = 18 km/h. Truck = 45 - 18 = 27 km/h.
