Quant – Simple Interest – Set 3

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. A sum of money at a certain rate per annum of simple interest doubles in the 5 years and at a different rate becomes three times in 12 years. The lower rate of interest per annum is :
    • A. 15%
    • B. 16 2/3 %
    • C. 15 3/4 %
    • D. 20%
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 16 2/3 %

    Doubling in 5 years means 20% a year. Tripling in 12 years means 200/12 = 16 2/3% a year. The lower rate is 16 2/3%.

  2. Out of Rs 50,000, a man lends Rs 8,000 at 5 1/2 % per annum simple interest and Rs 24,000 at 6% per annum simple interest. He lends the remaining money at a certain rate of interest so that he gets a total annual interest of Rs 3,680. The rate of interest per annum at which the remaining money is lent is:
    • A. 7%
    • B. 12%
    • C. 5%
    • D. 10%
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 10%

    Interest from the first two = 8000 × 5 1/2% + 24000 × 6% = 440 + 1,440 = 1,880. Remaining Rs 18,000 must earn 3,680 - 1,880 = 1,800, which is 10%.

  3. The simple interest on a sum of money is 1/4 of the principal and the number of years is equal to the rate percent per annum. The rate percent is:
    • A. 2.5%
    • B. 7.5%
    • C. 10%
    • D. 5%
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 5%

    Interest = r × r / 100 of the principal = 1/4, so r² = 25 and r = 5%.

  4. A sum was invested on simple interest at a certain rate for 2 years. Had it been put at 3% higher rate, it would have fetched Rs. 72 more. The sum is :
    • A. Rs. 1,200
    • B. Rs. 1,500
    • C. Rs. 1,800
    • D. Rs. 1,600
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. Rs. 1,200

The extra 3% for 2 years gives 6% of the sum = 72, so the sum = Rs 1,200.

  5. A lent Rs. 5000 to B for 2 years and Rs. 3000 to C for 4 years on simple interest at the same rate of interest and received Rs. 2200 in all from both as interest. The rate of interest per annum is :
    • A. 7%
    • B. 5%
    • C. 10%
    • D. 7 1/8 %
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 10%

    Interest = (5000 × 2 + 3000 × 4) × r / 100 = 220r = 2200, so r = 10%.

  6. In how many years will a sum of money double itself at 6 1/4 % simple interest per annum?
    • A. 20 years
    • B. 24 years
    • C. 16 years
    • D. 12 years
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 16 years

The interest must equal the sum, so time = 100 / 6.25 = 16 years.

  7. The simple interest on a sum of money is 1/9 of the principal and the number of years is equal to the rate of interest per annum. The rate per annum is:
    • A. 3 2/3 %
    • B. 3%
    • C. 1/3 %
    • D. 3 1/3 %
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 3 1/3 %

    r² / 100 = 1/9, so r² = 100/9 and r = 10/3 = 3 1/3%.

  8. A sum of money was invested at a certain rate of simple interest for 2 years. Had it been invested at 1% higher rate, it would have fetched Rs. 24 more interest. The sum of money is :
    • A. Rs. 1050
    • B. Rs. 1200
    • C. Rs. 9600
    • D. Rs. 1000
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. Rs. 1200

The extra 1% for 2 years gives 2% of the sum = 24, so the sum = Rs 1,200.

  9. Rs. 800 becomes Rs. 956 in 3 years at a certain rate of simple interest. If the rate of interest is increased by 4%, what amount will Rs. 800 become in 3 years ?
    • A. Rs. 1050
    • B. Rs. 1020.80
    • C. Rs. 1025
    • D. Rs. 1052
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Rs. 1052

    Interest = 956 - 800 = 156 in 3 years, so the rate = 156 × 100 / (800 × 3) = 6.5%. At 10.5%: interest = 800 × 10.5% × 3 = 252, so the amount = Rs 1,052.

  10. On a certain sum, the simple interest at the end of 6 1/4 years becomes 3/8 of the sum. The rate of interest is:
    • A. 8%
    • B. 6%
    • C. 7%
    • D. 5%
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 6%

    r × 6 1/4 / 100 = 3/8 gives r = 37.5 / 6.25 = 6%.
