Quant – Ratio & Proportion – Set 8

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. The income and expenditure of a person are in the ratio 7 : 5. If he saves Rs 4000, find his income.
    • A. Rs 14,000
    • B. Rs 16,800
    • C. Rs 9800
    • D. Rs 12,600
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. Rs 14,000

    Income : expenditure = 7 : 5, so savings = 2 parts = 4000. Income = 7 × 2000 = Rs 14,000.

  2. If A : B = 4 : 5, B : C = 5 : 6 and C : D = 2 : 5, find A : D.
    • A. 41 : 150
    • B. 2 : 3
    • C. 15 : 4
    • D. 4 : 15
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 4 : 15

    A : D = (4 × 5 × 2) : (5 × 6 × 5) = 40 : 150 = 4 : 15.

  3. Rs 3000 is divided among A, B and C in the ratio 4 : 5 : 6. How much does B get?
    • A. Rs 800
    • B. Rs 900
    • C. Rs 700
    • D. Rs 1000
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Rs 1000

    Total parts = 15, one part = 3000/15 = 200. B gets 5 × 200 = Rs 1000.

  4. The sum of two numbers is 60 and they are in the ratio 2 : 3. Find the larger number.
    • A. 28
    • B. 36
    • C. 32
    • D. 40
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 36

    One part = 60/5 = 12. Larger number = 3 × 12 = 36.

  5. Two numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3. If 20 is added to each, the ratio becomes 4 : 5. Find the smaller number.
    • A. 22
    • B. 26
    • C. 20
    • D. 16
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 20

    Let the numbers be 2k and 3k. (2k + 20)/(3k + 20) = 4/5 gives k = 10. Smaller number = 2 × 10 = 20.

  6. If A : B = 3 : 5 and B : C = 5 : 6, find A : B : C.
    • A. 3 : 5 : 6
    • B. 30 : 51 : 62
    • C. 3 : 5 : 11
    • D. 6 : 5 : 3
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 3 : 5 : 6

    Make B equal: A : B = 15 : 25 and B : C = 25 : 30. So A : B : C = 3 : 5 : 6.

  7. Find x if 3 : 8 = 15 : x.
    • A. 40
    • B. 52
    • C. 48
    • D. 44
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 40

    x = 8 × 15/3 = 40.

  8. Find the third proportional to 9 and 45.
    • A. 291
    • B. 181
    • C. 225
    • D. 232
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 225

    Third proportional = 45²/9 = 2025/9 = 225.

  9. A and B start a business with Rs 2000 and Rs 3000 for the same period. They earn a profit of Rs 6000. What is A's share?
    • A. Rs 2640
    • B. Rs 2160
    • C. Rs 2400
    • D. Rs 2880
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. Rs 2400

    Profit is shared in the ratio 2 : 3. A's share = 6000 × 2000/5000 = Rs 2400.

  10. The income and expenditure of a person are in the ratio 6 : 5. If he saves Rs 3000, find his income.
    • A. Rs 18,000
    • B. Rs 16,200
    • C. Rs 21,600
    • D. Rs 14,400
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. Rs 18,000

    Income : expenditure = 6 : 5, so savings = 1 parts = 3000. Income = 6 × 3000 = Rs 18,000.
