Quant – Ratio & Proportion – Set 5

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

This free practice set from AndamanJobs has 10 questions to be solved in 8 minutes. Every question is listed below with four options. Open Show answer and explanation under a question to see the correct option and why it is correct. Try the timed test above first, then use this list to revise the questions you got wrong.

  1. If A : B = 2 : 5, B : C = 2 : 3 and C : D = 5 : 7, find A : D.
    • A. 1 : 5
    • B. 40 : 211
    • C. 21 : 4
    • D. 4 : 21
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 4 : 21

    A : D = (2 × 2 × 5) : (5 × 3 × 7) = 20 : 105 = 4 : 21.

  2. Rs 3600 is divided among A, B and C in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5. How much does B get?
    • A. Rs 960
    • B. Rs 1200
    • C. Rs 840
    • D. Rs 1080
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. Rs 1200

    Total parts = 12, one part = 3600/12 = 300. B gets 4 × 300 = Rs 1200.

  3. The sum of two numbers is 30 and they are in the ratio 2 : 3. Find the larger number.
    • A. 18
    • B. 22
    • C. 24
    • D. 14
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 18

    One part = 30/5 = 6. Larger number = 3 × 6 = 18.

  4. Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 8. If 10 is added to each, the ratio becomes 7 : 10. Find the smaller number.
    • A. 21
    • B. 31
    • C. 25
    • D. 27
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 25

    Let the numbers be 5k and 8k. (5k + 10)/(8k + 10) = 7/10 gives k = 5. Smaller number = 5 × 5 = 25.

  5. The present ages of A and B are in the ratio 2 : 3. After 5 years the ratio will be 3 : 4. What is A's present age?
    • A. 14 years
    • B. 10 years
    • C. 6 years
    • D. 16 years
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 10 years

    Let ages be 2k and 3k. (2k + 5)/(3k + 5) = 3/4 gives k = 5. A = 2 × 5 = 10 years.

  6. If A : B = 2 : 5 and B : C = 3 : 7, find A : B : C.
    • A. 6 : 15 : 35
    • B. 2 : 5 : 7
    • C. 6 : 15 : 50
    • D. 35 : 15 : 6
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 6 : 15 : 35

    Make B equal: A : B = 6 : 15 and B : C = 15 : 35. So A : B : C = 6 : 15 : 35.

  7. Find x if 2 : 5 = 10 : x.
    • A. 27
    • B. 19
    • C. 31
    • D. 25
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 25

    x = 5 × 10/2 = 25.

  8. Find the mean proportional between 5 and 80.
    • A. 24
    • B. 22
    • C. 18
    • D. 20
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 20

    Mean proportional = √(5 × 80) = √400 = 20.

  9. Find the third proportional to 4 and 12.
    • A. 32
    • B. 36
    • C. 48
    • D. 44
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 36

    Third proportional = 12²/4 = 144/4 = 36.

  10. A bag contains Re 1, 50 paise and 25 paise coins in the ratio 4 : 6 : 8. If the total value is Rs 180, how many 50 paise coins are there?
    • A. 120
    • B. 132
    • C. 108
    • D. 84
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 120

    Let the coins be 4k, 6k and 8k. Value = 4k + 0.5 × 6k + 0.25 × 8k = 9k = 180. So k = 20 and the 50 paise coins = 6 × 20 = 120.
