Quant – Ratio & Proportion – Set 3

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. Rs 4800 is divided among A, B and C in the ratio 2 : 3 : 7. How much does A get?
    • A. Rs 960
    • B. Rs 800
    • C. Rs 560
    • D. Rs 640
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. Rs 800

    Total parts = 12, one part = 4800/12 = 400. A gets 2 × 400 = Rs 800.

  2. The sum of two numbers is 32 and they are in the ratio 3 : 5. Find the larger number.
    • A. 24
    • B. 18
    • C. 20
    • D. 14
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 20

    One part = 32/8 = 4. Larger number = 5 × 4 = 20.

  3. If A : B = 2 : 3 and B : C = 3 : 4, find A : B : C.
    • A. 4 : 3 : 2
    • B. 2 : 3 : 4
    • C. 2 : 3 : 7
    • D. 12 : 19 : 26
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 2 : 3 : 4

    Make B equal: A : B = 6 : 9 and B : C = 9 : 12. So A : B : C = 2 : 3 : 4.

  4. Find x if 4 : 9 = 8 : x.
    • A. 24
    • B. 18
    • C. 16
    • D. 22
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 18

    x = 9 × 8/4 = 18.

  5. Find the third proportional to 2 and 10.
    • A. 55
    • B. 50
    • C. 65
    • D. 40
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 50

    Third proportional = 10²/2 = 100/2 = 50.

  6. A bag contains Re 1, 50 paise and 25 paise coins in the ratio 4 : 6 : 8. If the total value is Rs 108, how many 50 paise coins are there?
    • A. 72
    • B. 65
    • C. 58
    • D. 79
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 72

    Let the coins be 4k, 6k and 8k. Value = 4k + 0.5 × 6k + 0.25 × 8k = 9k = 108. So k = 12 and the 50 paise coins = 6 × 12 = 72.

  7. A and B start a business with Rs 4000 and Rs 6000 for the same period. They earn a profit of Rs 20,000. What is A's share?
    • A. Rs 9600
    • B. Rs 8000
    • C. Rs 7200
    • D. Rs 5600
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. Rs 8000

    Profit is shared in the ratio 2 : 3. A's share = 20,000 × 4000/10000 = Rs 8000.

  8. The income and expenditure of a person are in the ratio 5 : 4. If he saves Rs 2000, find his income.
    • A. Rs 10,000
    • B. Rs 12,000
    • C. Rs 7000
    • D. Rs 8000
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. Rs 10,000

    Income : expenditure = 5 : 4, so savings = 1 parts = 2000. Income = 5 × 2000 = Rs 10,000.

  9. In a class of 120 students, the ratio of boys to girls is 5 : 3. How many girls are there?
    • A. 52
    • B. 57
    • C. 45
    • D. 49
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 45

    One part = 120/8 = 15. Girls = 3 × 15 = 45.

  10. If A : B = 2 : 5, B : C = 3 : 4 and C : D = 1 : 3, find A : D.
    • A. 10 : 1
    • B. 1 : 2
    • C. 7 : 60
    • D. 1 : 10
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 1 : 10

    A : D = (2 × 3 × 1) : (5 × 4 × 3) = 6 : 60 = 1 : 10.
