Quant – Pipes & Cisterns – Set 7

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. Pipe A can fill a tank in 6 hours and pipe B can empty it in 12 hours. They are opened alternately for one hour each, starting with A. In how many hours will the empty tank be full?
    • A. 25 hours
    • B. 21 hours
    • C. 17 hours
    • D. 19 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 21 hours

    Each 2-hour cycle (A then B) adds 1/6 - 1/12 = 1/12. After 10 cycles (20 hours) the tank is 5/6 full. A then fills the remaining 1/6 in 1 hour(s). Total = 21 hours.

  2. A tank can be filled by one pipe in 20 hours. A second pipe is added, and the two together fill it in 12 hours. In how many hours can the second pipe alone fill the tank?
    • A. 24 hours
    • B. 28 hours
    • C. 30 hours
    • D. 34 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 30 hours

    Second pipe's rate = 1/12 - 1/20 = 1/30. It takes 30 hours alone.

  3. Pipe A can fill a tank in 40 hours and pipe B in 60 hours. If both are opened together, in how many hours will the empty tank be filled?
    • A. 21 hours
    • B. 24 hours
    • C. 25 hours
    • D. 23 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 24 hours

    Part filled in 1 hour = 1/40 + 1/60 = 1/24. Time = 24 hours.

  4. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 24 and 48 hours. Both are opened together, and after 6 hours pipe A is closed. How many hours in all will the tank take to fill?
    • A. 42 hours
    • B. 36 hours
    • C. 40 hours
    • D. 34 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 36 hours

    Part filled in 6 hours = 3/8. Remaining 5/8 is filled by B in 30 hours. Total = 6 + 30 = 36 hours.

  5. Two pipes fill a tank at 10 litres per minute and 20 litres per minute. Together they fill the tank in 15 minutes. What is the capacity of the tank?
    • A. 315 litres
    • B. 360 litres
    • C. 450 litres
    • D. 405 litres
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 450 litres

    Capacity = (rate of A + rate of B) × time = (10 + 20) × 15 = 450 litres.

  6. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 12 and 18 hours. If both are opened together, what part of the tank is filled in 1 hour?
    • A. 7/18
    • B. 5/36
    • C. 2/9
    • D. 1/18
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 5/36

    In 1 hour they fill 1/12 + 1/18 = 5/36. In 1 hour = 5/36 of the tank.

  7. Pipe A can fill a tank in 4 hours and pipe B can empty it in 10 hours. They are opened alternately for one hour each, starting with A. In how many hours will the empty tank be full?
    • A. 15 hours
    • B. 13 hours
    • C. 11 hours
    • D. 5 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 11 hours

    Each 2-hour cycle (A then B) adds 1/4 - 1/10 = 3/20. After 5 cycles (10 hours) the tank is 3/4 full. A then fills the remaining 1/4 in 1 hour(s). Total = 11 hours.

  8. Pipe A can fill a tank in 14 hours and pipe B in 35 hours. If both are opened together, in how many hours will the empty tank be filled?
    • A. 10 hours
    • B. 7 hours
    • C. 11 hours
    • D. 13 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 10 hours

    Part filled in 1 hour = 1/14 + 1/35 = 1/10. Time = 10 hours.

  9. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 20 and 30 hours. Both are opened together, and after 5 hours pipe A is closed. How many hours in all will the tank take to fill?
    • A. 28 1/2 hours
    • B. 20 1/2 hours
    • C. 22 1/2 hours
    • D. 16 1/2 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 22 1/2 hours

    Part filled in 5 hours = 5/12. Remaining 7/12 is filled by B in 17 1/2 hours. Total = 5 + 17 1/2 = 22 1/2 hours.

  10. Two pipes fill a tank at 25 litres per minute and 35 litres per minute. Together they fill the tank in 40 minutes. What is the capacity of the tank?
    • A. 2640 litres
    • B. 2160 litres
    • C. 3120 litres
    • D. 2400 litres
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 2400 litres

    Capacity = (rate of A + rate of B) × time = (25 + 35) × 40 = 2400 litres.
