Quant – Pipes & Cisterns – Set 3

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.
Review this set's questions and answers (opens after you submit the test)

This free practice set from AndamanJobs has 10 questions to be solved in 8 minutes. Every question is listed below with four options. Open Show answer and explanation under a question to see the correct option and why it is correct. Try the timed test above first, then use this list to revise the questions you got wrong.

  1. A pipe can fill a tank in 12 hours and another pipe can empty it in 15 hours. If both are opened together on the empty tank, in how many hours will it be full?
    • A. 66 hours
    • B. 56 hours
    • C. 64 hours
    • D. 60 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 60 hours

    Net part filled in 1 hour = 1/12 - 1/15 = 1/60. Time = 60 hours.

  2. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 15 and 30 hours, and pipe C can empty it in 30 hours. If all three are opened together, in how many hours will the empty tank be filled?
    • A. 17 hours
    • B. 15 hours
    • C. 21 hours
    • D. 9 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 15 hours

    Net part in 1 hour = 1/15 + 1/30 - 1/30 = 1/15. Time = 15 hours.

  3. Two pipes fill a tank at 20 litres per minute and 30 litres per minute. Together they fill the tank in 10 minutes. What is the capacity of the tank?
    • A. 600 litres
    • B. 500 litres
    • C. 350 litres
    • D. 450 litres
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 500 litres

    Capacity = (rate of A + rate of B) × time = (20 + 30) × 10 = 500 litres.

  4. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 10 and 15 hours. If both are opened together, what part of the tank is filled in 2 hours?
    • A. 1/30
    • B. 19/30
    • C. 2/15
    • D. 1/3
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 1/3

    In 1 hour they fill 1/10 + 1/15 = 1/6. In 2 hours = 1/3 of the tank.

  5. A tank can be filled by one pipe in 18 hours. A second pipe is added, and the two together fill it in 12 hours. In how many hours can the second pipe alone fill the tank?
    • A. 42 hours
    • B. 30 hours
    • C. 36 hours
    • D. 32 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 36 hours

    Second pipe's rate = 1/12 - 1/18 = 1/36. It takes 36 hours alone.

  6. Pipe A can fill a tank in 21 hours and pipe B in 42 hours. If both are opened together, in how many hours will the empty tank be filled?
    • A. 15 hours
    • B. 16 hours
    • C. 14 hours
    • D. 13 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 14 hours

    Part filled in 1 hour = 1/21 + 1/42 = 1/14. Time = 14 hours.

  7. A pipe fills a tank in 6 hours. Because of a leak it takes 9 hours. In how many hours will the leak alone empty the full tank?
    • A. 24 hours
    • B. 18 hours
    • C. 9 hours
    • D. 27 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 18 hours

    Leak's rate = 1/6 - 1/9 = 1/18 per hour, so it empties the tank in 18 hours.

  8. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 12 and 20 hours, and pipe C can empty it in 30 hours. If all three are opened together, in how many hours will the empty tank be filled?
    • A. 14 hours
    • B. 6 hours
    • C. 5 hours
    • D. 10 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 10 hours

    Net part in 1 hour = 1/12 + 1/20 - 1/30 = 1/10. Time = 10 hours.

  9. Pipes A and B can fill a tank in 8 and 24 hours. Both are opened together, and after 3 hours pipe A is closed. How many hours in all will the tank take to fill?
    • A. 11 hours
    • B. 15 hours
    • C. 19 hours
    • D. 9 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 15 hours

    Part filled in 3 hours = 1/2. Remaining 1/2 is filled by B in 12 hours. Total = 3 + 12 = 15 hours.

  10. Two pipes fill a tank at 24 litres per minute and 36 litres per minute. Together they fill the tank in 40 minutes. What is the capacity of the tank?
    • A. 3120 litres
    • B. 2640 litres
    • C. 2400 litres
    • D. 1680 litres
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 2400 litres

    Capacity = (rate of A + rate of B) × time = (24 + 36) × 40 = 2400 litres.
