Quant – Boat & Stream – Set 6

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.
Review this set's questions and answers (opens after you submit the test)

This free practice set from AndamanJobs has 10 questions to be solved in 8 minutes. Every question is listed below with four options. Open Show answer and explanation under a question to see the correct option and why it is correct. Try the timed test above first, then use this list to revise the questions you got wrong.

  1. A boat takes 2 hours to go 24 km downstream and 6 hours to return the same distance upstream. What is the speed of the stream?
    • A. 3 km/h
    • B. 6 km/h
    • C. 1 km/h
    • D. 4 km/h
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 4 km/h

    Downstream speed = 24/2 = 12 km/h and upstream = 24/6 = 4 km/h. Stream = (12 - 4)/2 = 4 km/h.

  2. The speed of a boat in still water and the speed of the stream are in the ratio 9 : 4. Find the ratio of the downstream speed to the upstream speed.
    • A. 13 : 9
    • B. 13 : 5
    • C. 9 : 4
    • D. 5 : 13
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 13 : 5

    Take boat = 9k and stream = 4k. Downstream = 13k and upstream = 5k. Ratio = 13 : 5.

  3. A boat takes 4 hours to go downstream and 6 hours to cover the same distance upstream. If the stream flows at 2 km/h, find the speed of the boat in still water.
    • A. 10 km/h
    • B. 6 km/h
    • C. 12 km/h
    • D. 5 km/h
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 10 km/h

    Same distance: (b + 2) × 4 = (b - 2) × 6. This gives b = 2 × (4 + 6)/(6 - 4) = 10 km/h.

  4. A man rows 14 km upstream in 4 hours and 30 km downstream in the same time. What is his speed in still water?
    • A. 7 1/2 km/h
    • B. 5 1/2 km/h
    • C. 6 1/2 km/h
    • D. 2 1/2 km/h
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 5 1/2 km/h

    Upstream speed = 14/4 = 3 1/2 km/h and downstream = 30/4 = 7 1/2 km/h. Still water speed = (3 1/2 + 7 1/2)/2 = 5 1/2 km/h.

  5. A swimmer's speed in still water is 24 km/h and the river flows at 2 km/h. How many minutes will he take to swim 60 km against the current?
    • A. 193 7/11 minutes
    • B. 163 7/11 minutes
    • C. 173 7/11 minutes
    • D. 153 7/11 minutes
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 163 7/11 minutes

    Upstream speed = 24 - 2 = 22 km/h. Time = 60/22 hours = 2 8/11 × 60 = 163 7/11 minutes.

  6. A boat goes at 10 km/h in still water and the stream flows at 2 km/h. How long will it take to go 72 km upstream?
    • A. 11 hours
    • B. 6 hours
    • C. 9 hours
    • D. 7 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 9 hours

    Upstream speed = 10 - 2 = 8 km/h. Time = 72/8 = 9 hours.

  7. A boat takes 2 hours to go 40 km downstream and 4 hours to return the same distance upstream. What is the speed of the stream?
    • A. 5 km/h
    • B. 4 km/h
    • C. 8 km/h
    • D. 6 km/h
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 5 km/h

    Downstream speed = 40/2 = 20 km/h and upstream = 40/4 = 10 km/h. Stream = (20 - 10)/2 = 5 km/h.

  8. A boat takes 1 hour to go downstream and 2 hours to cover the same distance upstream. If the stream flows at 3 km/h, find the speed of the boat in still water.
    • A. 9 km/h
    • B. 11 km/h
    • C. 7 km/h
    • D. 13 km/h
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 9 km/h

    Same distance: (b + 3) × 1 = (b - 3) × 2. This gives b = 3 × (1 + 2)/(2 - 1) = 9 km/h.

  9. A swimmer's speed in still water is 18 km/h and the river flows at 4 km/h. How many minutes will he take to swim 40 km against the current?
    • A. 171 3/7 minutes
    • B. 141 3/7 minutes
    • C. 181 3/7 minutes
    • D. 201 3/7 minutes
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 171 3/7 minutes

    Upstream speed = 18 - 4 = 14 km/h. Time = 40/14 hours = 2 6/7 × 60 = 171 3/7 minutes.

  10. A boat goes at 8 km/h in still water and the stream flows at 4 km/h. How long will it take to go 72 km downstream?
    • A. 5 hours
    • B. 9 hours
    • C. 6 hours
    • D. 8 hours
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 6 hours

    Downstream speed = 8 + 4 = 12 km/h. Time = 72/12 = 6 hours.
