MTS Reasoning – Syllogism, Statements & Venn (Topic Test)

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. Statements: No policeman is a thief. All thieves are criminals. Conclusion: Some criminals are not policemen. Valid?
    • A. Only if all criminals are thieves
    • B. No
    • C. Yes
    • D. Cannot say
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. Yes

Thieves are criminals and no thief is a policeman, so those criminals are certainly not policemen.

  2. Which of the following figures correctly represents the relation between: Chess, Cricket, Outdoor Games
    A)B)C)D)
    • A. C
    • B. B
    • C. A
    • D. D
    Show answer and explanation

Cricket is a kind of outdoor game (one circle inside another), while chess is a separate indoor game. Figure A shows this.

  3. Which among the following illustrates the relationship among the Pigeons, Birds, Dogs?
    A)B)C)D)
    • A. C
    • B. A
    • C. B
    • D. D
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. D

Pigeons are a subset of Birds (a smaller circle inside a larger one), while Dogs are a separate class unrelated to Birds, shown by a separate circle (D).

  4. Assertion (A): Baking soda creates acidity in the stomach.
Reason (R): Baking soda is alkaline.
    • A. A is false but R is true.
    • B. A is true but R is false.
    • C. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
    • D. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. A is false but R is true.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is alkaline and neutralises excess stomach acid, so A is false and R is true. The printed key shows option A.

  5. One or two statements are given followed by two Conclusions/Assumptions, I and II. You have to consider the statement to be true, even if it seems to be at variance from commonly known facts. You have to decide which of the given conclusions/assumptions can definitely be drawn from the given statement. Indicate your answer.
    Statements
    Some trees are pens.
    All pens are pencils.
    Conclusions
    I. Some pencils are pens.
    II. Some pencils are trees.
    • A. Only conclusion I follows.
    • B. Neither conclusion I nor conclusion II follows.
    • C. Both conclusion I and conclusion II follows.
    • D. Only conclusion II follows.
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. Both conclusion I and conclusion II follows.

'All pens are pencils' converts to 'Some pencils are pens' (I). Since some trees are pens and all pens are pencils, some trees are pencils, i.e. some pencils are trees (II). Both follow.

  6. Statement: The college has decided to hold classes on Saturdays. Assumption: Students are available on Saturdays. Is the assumption implicit?
    • A. Only for some students
    • B. Cannot be determined
    • C. No
    • D. Yes
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Yes

Scheduling classes on Saturday only makes sense if students can attend, so the assumption is implicit.

  7. One or two statements are given, followed by two Conclusions/Inference, A and B. You have to consider the statement to be true, even if it seems to be at variance from commonly known facts. You have to decide which of the given conclusions/inference can definitely be drawn from the given statements. Indicate your answer.
    Statements
    1. All goats are cows.
    2. Some goats are lambs.
    Conclusions / Inference
    A. All goats are lambs.
    B. Some lambs are cows.
    • A. Only inference A follows.
    • B. Only inference B follows.
    • C. Both inferences A and B follow.
    • D. Neither inference A nor B follows.
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Only inference B follows.

Only some goats are lambs, so A does not follow; those goats that are lambs are also cows, so some lambs are cows and B follows.

  8. Which conclusion follows? Statements: Some books are pens. All pens are pencils. Conclusions: (I) Some books are pencils. (II) All pencils are books.
    • A. Only I follows
    • B. Neither follows
    • C. Both follow
    • D. Only II follows
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. Only I follows

The books that are pens must be pencils, so I follows. Nothing supports II.

  9. Statement: All ferries are boats. All boats float. Conclusion: All ferries float. Is the conclusion valid?
    • A. Yes
    • B. Cannot be determined
    • C. Only sometimes
    • D. No
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. Yes

The conclusion follows directly from the two statements.

  10. Assertion (A): The Indian Constitution came into force with effect from 26th January, 1948.
Reason (R): 26th January is celebrated as the Constitution Day.
    • A. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
    • B. A is false but R is true.
    • C. Both A and R are false.
    • D. A is true but R is false.
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. Both A and R are false.

The Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950, not 1948. Constitution Day is 26 November, while 26 January is Republic Day. So both A and R are false. The printed key shows option C.

  11. Statements: All pens are books. All books are papers. Conclusion: All pens are papers. Valid?
    • A. No
    • B. Partly
    • C. Cannot say
    • D. Yes
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Yes

The chain of inclusion makes the conclusion follow.

  12. Statements:
    I. All pens are markers.
    II. Some markers are pencils.
    Conclusions:
    I. All pencils are pens.
    II. Some markers are pens.
    • A. Neither I nor II follows
    • B. Both I and II follow
    • C. Only conclusion II follows
    • D. Only conclusion I follows
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. Only conclusion II follows

    • A. Three disjoint circles
    • B. Three mutually intersecting circles
    • C. Two concentric circles inside a third
    • D. Two separate circles inside a larger one
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Three mutually intersecting circles

  14. Statement: The municipal corporation has decided to ban structural modifications of buildings older than 50 years without prior safety audits.
    Assumptions:
    I. Structural modifications to old buildings without safety checks may put them at risk.
II. People will comply with the municipal orders.
    • A. Only assumption I is implicit
    • B. Both I and II are implicit
    • C. Only assumption II is implicit
    • D. Neither I nor II is implicit
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Both I and II are implicit

  15. Statements: All roses are flowers. Some flowers fade quickly. Conclusion: Some roses fade quickly. Is the conclusion valid?
    • A. Cannot be determined
    • B. Only partly
    • C. Yes
    • D. No
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. No

The flowers that fade quickly need not include any rose, so the conclusion does not follow.

  16. Statements: Some cats are dogs. All dogs are animals. Conclusion: Some cats are animals. Valid?
    • A. No
    • B. Never
    • C. Cannot say
    • D. Yes
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Yes

Those cats that are dogs must also be animals, so some cats are animals.

  17. Assertion (A): Graphite is slippery and used as a lubricant.
Reason (R): Graphite has free electrons.
    • A. Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
    • B. A is true but R is false.
    • C. Both A and R are false.
    • D. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.
    Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. Both A and R are true but R is NOT the correct explanation of A.

Graphite is slippery because its layers are held together by weak forces and slide over one another. It also has free (delocalised) electrons, so R is true, but they do not explain the lubricating property. The printed key shows option C.
