MTS Reasoning – Figures, Mirror & Paper Folding (Topic Test)

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.

  1. A cube painted on all faces is cut into 27 equal cubes. How many have no face painted?
    • A. Six
    • B. One
    • C. Twelve
    • D. Eight
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. One

Only the single cube at the very centre is untouched by paint.

  2. If a mirror is placed on the line MN, then which of the answer figures is the right image of the given figure?
    • A. D
    • B. C
    • C. B
    • D. A
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. A

In a mirror on the left the tube on the left of the flask appears on the right and still points upward (tip higher than the flask end); only A shows this, while B has the tube pointing downward.

  3. If in a certain language PAPER is written as QBQFS, how is PENCIL written?
    • A. PFODJM
    • B. QFOCJM
    • C. QFODIM
    • D. QFODJM
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. QFODJM

    Each letter moves forward one place: P→Q, E→F, N→O, C→D, I→J, L→M.

  4. How many triangles are there in the given figure?
    • A. 10
    • B. 12
    • C. 11
    • D. 9
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 12

Three lines (the altitude from the apex, the line from the left base corner to the right side, and the segment from the right base corner) meet at one interior point; counting all triangles formed gives 12.

  5. Choose the alternative that closely resembles the mirror image of the given combination, if the mirror is placed on the right (the vertical line).
    UTZFY6
    • A. [[fc:6YFZTU|nxxxxx]]
    • B. [[fc:6YZFTU|xxxxxx]]
    • C. [[fc:6YFZTU|xxxxxx]]
    • D. [[fc:UTZFY6|xxxxxx]]
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. [[fc:6YFZTU|xxxxxx]]

A mirror on the right reverses the order of the characters (6, Y, F, Z, T, U) and turns each one sideways.

  6. How many triangles are formed when both diagonals of a rectangle are drawn?
    • A. Six
    • B. Four
    • C. Two
    • D. Eight
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. Eight

Both diagonals create four small triangles and four larger ones, eight in total.

  7. A piece of paper is folded and cut as shown below in the question figures. From the given answer figures, indicate how it will appear when opened.
    Figure for the question
    • A. D
    • B. C
    • C. B
    • D. A
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. D

The correct answer is option D, as given in the official key.

  8. How many squares are there in the following figure?
    AEBHFCGDI
    • A. 4
    • B. 6
    • C. 5
    • D. 8
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 6

There is the outer square ABDC, the inner square EFGH and four small squares such as AEIH, EBFI, HIGC and IFDG, giving 6.

  9. From the given answer figures, select the one in which the question figure is hidden/embedded.
    • A. A
    • B. D
    • C. C
    • D. B
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. B

Only figure B contains the small square with its short vertical stem, in the upper left of the figure.

  10. Which answer figure will complete the pattern in the question figure?
    Figure for the question
    • A. D
    • B. B
    • C. A
    • D. C
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. A

The four quadrants are mirror images of one tile with a centre circle, a dot near the middle and a circle at the outer corner; the missing bottom-right tile must have all three, which only A has.

  11. A cube is painted blue on all faces and then cut into 27 small cubes of equal size. How many small cubes will have only two faces painted?
    • A. 12
    • B. 6
    • C. 1
    • D. 8
