MTS Reasoning – Coding-Decoding & Operations (Topic Test)

General Instructions

  1. The clock is set at the server. The countdown timer at the top of the screen shows the time remaining. When it reaches zero the test ends by itself — you do not have to submit.
  2. The Question Palette shows the status of every question using these symbols:
    • You have not visited the question yet.
    • You have not answered the question.
    • You have answered the question.
    • You have NOT answered, but have marked it for review.
    • You have answered and also marked it for review.
Marking a question for review only means you want to look at it again. An answered question that is marked for review is still counted in the evaluation.
  3. To answer a question: choose one of the four options, then press Save & Next. To change an answer, select a different option and save again. To remove it, press Clear.
  4. Your answer is saved only when you press Save & Next or Mark for Review & Next. If you jump to another question from the palette without saving, the answer to the question you were on is not kept. This is how the real exam behaves.
  5. Sections appear on the bar above the question. You may move between sections at any time, and after the last question of a section you are taken to the first question of the next one.
  6. Only questions that are saved, or marked for review after answering, are evaluated.
Review this set's questions and answers (opens after you submit the test)

This free practice set from AndamanJobs has 20 questions to be solved in 16 minutes. Every question is listed below with four options. 1. If MOHAN is represented by the code KMFYL, then COUNT will be represented by:
    • A. AMSLR
    • B. MASRL
    • C. SAMLR
    • D. MSLAR
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. AMSLR

Each letter is shifted 2 places back (M-K, O-M, H-F, A-Y, N-L), so COUNT becomes AMSLR.

  2. If LOCK is coded as MPDL, how will DOOR be coded?
    • A. EPPS
    • B. EPPQ
    • C. EPQS
    • D. CMMS
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. EPPS

    Each letter moves one place forward: L-M, O-P, C-D, K-L. So D-E, O-P, O-P, R-S gives EPPS.

  3. If '+' means '–','–' means '÷', '÷' means 'x' and 'x' means '+', what is value of:
    125–5 x 10 ÷ 13 + 28
    • A. 115
    • B. 127
    • C. 130
    • D. 140
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 127

    Substituting the symbols gives 125 ÷ 5 + 10 × 13 - 28 = 25 + 130 - 28 = 127.

  4. If in a certain code LAMP is written as MBNQ, how is BOAT written?
    • A. CPBU
    • B. CPBT
    • C. CQBU
    • D. BPCU
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. CPBU

Each letter moves forward one place: B→C, O→P, A→B, T→U.

  5. A word is represented by only one set of numbers as given in any one of the alternatives. The sets of numbers given in the alternatives are represented by two classes of alphabets as in two matrices given below. The columns and rows of Matrix I are numbered from 0 to 4 and that of Matrix II are numbered from 5 to 9. A letter from these matrices can be represented first by its row and next by its column, e.g., 'E' can be represented by 20,44 etc., and 'P' can be represented by 59,98 etc. Similarly, you have to identify the set for the word LAMB.
    • A. 69, 87, 42, 55
    • B. 76, 42, 78, 00
    • C. 69, 24, 78, 05
    • D. 99, 22, 68, 23
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 76, 42, 78, 00

    L = 76 (row 7, col 6 of Matrix II), A = 42 (row 4, col 2 of Matrix I), M = 78 (row 7, col 8), B = 00 (row 0, col 0). So 76, 42, 78, 00.

  6. In a certain code language, 'ROAST' is written as 'PQYUR'. How will 'SLATE' be written in that code language?
    • A. QZCRG
    • B. QJCVG
    • C. QJYRC
    • D. QNYVC
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. QNYVC

Letters alternate: first letter two back, second two forward, and so on (R-2=P, O+2=Q, A-2=Y, S+2=U, T-2=R). So SLATE becomes Q, N, Y, V, C.

  7. If + means x and x means +, what is 6 + 3 x 2?
    • A. 24
    • B. 20
    • C. 18
    • D. 12
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 20

    Swapping the symbols gives 6 x 3 + 2 = 18 + 2 = 20.

  8. If 'P' denotes '÷', 'Q' denotes '×', 'R' denotes '+' and 'S' denotes '-' then: 12Q15P3R4S6 = ?
    • A. 70
    • B. 58
    • C. 57
    • D. 68
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: B. 58

    12 × 15 ÷ 3 + 4 - 6 = 180 ÷ 3 + 4 - 6 = 60 + 4 - 6 = 58.

  9. If in a certain language MONDAY is written as NPOEBZ, what is the code for SUNDAY?
    • A. TWOEBZ
    • B. TVOEBZ
    • C. TVOFBZ
    • D. TVPEBZ
    Show answer and explanation

    • A. EBOEMF
    • B. DBPEMF
    • C. DBOEMF
    • D. DBOFMF
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. DBOEMF

    Each letter moves forward one place: C-D, A-B, N-O, D-E, L-M, E-F.

  11. In a code, TEACHER is written as VGCEJGT. How is STUDENT written?
    • A. UVXFGPV
    • B. UVWFGVP
    • C. UVWFGPV
    • D. UWVFGPV
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. UVWFGPV

Each letter moves forward two places.

  12. If BOOK is coded as 2-15-15-11, how is DESK coded in the same way?
    • A. 4-5-19-11
    • B. 4-5-18-11
    • C. 3-5-19-11
    • D. 4-6-19-11
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 4-5-19-11

Each letter is replaced by its position in the alphabet: D=4, E=5, S=19, K=11.

  13. If 5 × 4 = 15, 7 × 3 = 14, and 9 × 6 = 45, then 8 × 5 = ?
    • A. 32
    • B. 35
    • C. 40
    • D. 30
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: A. 32

    The rule is the product minus the first number: 20 − 5 = 15, 21 − 7 = 14, 54 − 9 = 45. So 40 − 8 = 32.

  14. If A + B means A is the father of B, A − B means A is the sister of B, and A × B means A is the wife of B, then what does P × Q + R mean?
    • A. P is the mother of R

Each letter is replaced by its position: M=13, I=9, N=14, D=4.

  16. Some equations are solved on the basis of certain system. Find out the correct answer for the unsolved equation on that basis. 5 x 4 x 2 = 452; 7 x 8 x 6 = 876; 5 x 7 x 9 = ?
    • A. 450
    • B. 680
    • C. 220
    • D. 759
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 759

The first two numbers swap places and the third stays: 5,4,2 becomes 4,5,2 and 7,8,6 becomes 8,7,6. So 5,7,9 becomes 7,5,9 = 759.

  17. If SEA is coded as 1951, how is BAY coded using the same alphabet-position method?
    • A. 1225
    • B. 2152
    • C. 2215
    • D. 2125
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: D. 2125

    Each letter is replaced by its position: S=19, E=5, A=1 gives 1951. So B=2, A=1, Y=25 gives 2125.

    • D. 41
    Show answer and explanation

    Answer: C. 40

    R+E+D = 18+5+4 = 27, so B+L+U+E = 2+12+21+5 = 40.
